Teree Sang (2009) *HQ*

As film titles in Bollywood continue to follow their own bizarre numerological logic, tag lines are finally getting inventive, while the neglected story telling department is yet to catch up.Satish Kaushik’s new film is titled Teree Sang-a Kidult story, which is how it’s probably pronounced by senior citizens in outer Mongolia.Anyway, in a country where we still have to tackle the contentious issue of kissing on screen, let alone indulging in actual sex, tauba tauba, Teree Sang poses the challenging issue of teenage pregnancy.So, kudos to the director and producer for picking a relevant topic. Unfortunately, it’s just the premise that’s novel, while the treatment itself is quite banal.

The film could have made for an interesting watch but for its conventional plot and clichéd characterizations.The social theme is set on the same-old plot of rich-girl-poor-boy formula. Junior college student Kukko (Ruslaan Mumtaz) falls in love with super-rich school girl Maahi (Sheena Shahabadi).Bollywood’s customary catalyst, ‘alcohol’ influences them to copulate and Maahi gets pregnant.She wants to keep the baby which her rich father (Rajat Kapoor) opposes.So the duo elopes and lives on their own until she delivers.

The performance by the lead pair varies from appearing innocent to amateurish.Ruslaan is endearing though Sheena’s nasal twang and childish approach to her character gets irritating at times.Rajat Kapoor does justice to his high socialite character.Satish Kaushik entertains more as an actor than as a director.Teree Sang is not a bad film but its immaturity fails to deliver.
