Anubhav (2009)

Anubhav is the story of a theatre actor, Anubhav, played by Sanjay Suri whose newborn baby and wife (Gul Panag) need an expensive surgery. To pay for the operation that would save his wife, he becomes a gigolo. A shady doctor (Mita Vashisht) and a limping pimp (Raj Zutshi) put him on this path when he has no other option to make money. Anoop Menon plays his best friend who supports him through everything.

The first half shows the romance blossoming between Gul and Sanjay, their marriage against her parents’ wishes.Jackie Shroff plays an eccentric theatre guru who gets the two hitched. The second half depicts the state of mind and guilt that Sanjay goes through and how he becomes a seasoned gigolo.Sanjay Suri is a sensitive actor and enacts his part well. Gul Panag has had better roles and performances. Anoop Menon, as Sanjay’s best friend, is very good. Jackie Shroff is eccentric enough.

It is an unusual and sensitive topic which is decently handled. The happy ending is rather abrupt, as if the writers ran out of their creative juices. Even certain scenes, like the one where Shruti Seth confesses her love for Sanjay Suri was not required and made no sense. What will stay with you is Sanjay’s graphic, rather gross description of his sexual encounters.Anubhav is a pseudo art film that is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is definitely not worth your ticket money. People who like Sanjay Suri and slow and arty films could watch it on DVD for less.
